What have you been reading lately?
Here are some
treasures I've accumulated for you:
Over spring break I read Airball by L.D.
Harkrader and loved it! For your students who've enjoyed
Travel Team (Lone Star
05-06), Airball is an easy read
accompaniment. Airball would be a good
addition to either an elementary or middle school library.

"Airball is a quirky
combination of The Mighty Ducks meets "Captain Underpants"
with a sideline story involving the search for a biological
father." School Library

Journal.
Judi Sparks, Technology Coordinator, has recommended
Three Weeks with my Brother by Nicholas Sparks
(author of Message in a Bottle and
The Notebook). Although the reading and
interest level is listed as ADULT, she recommends it for high school
reading.
Judi also recommends looking at
the Nicholas Sparks' website for more information about the book:

I read a book that I’d like
for all of you to read, if you have not already! It is Anne
Provoost’s In the Shadow of the
Ark.
I was simply hypnotized by
Provoost’s
wonderful attempt to tell the Old Testament story of the flood and the many trials and
tribulations of
Noah’s family. I couldn’t put it down-students
visiting the library found me for several days with book in hand as I
tended to all the many tasks of the library!
The novel centers
around Re Jana and her family forced to flee their home in the marshes
to seek shelter in the desert. There they find thousands of people,
the Builder (Noah) at the helm, erecting the
Ark.
It’s master builder, (Noah) is the only person who
knows the real purpose of its construction-many have their own ideas
and the suppositions are many. Ham, the youngest son of Noah, falls in
love with Re Jana, but because she is not “chosen” to
survive the great flood, Ham’s life becomes so complicated. His need to be with his
family and Re Jana sets up the central conflict. Will Ham’s love
save Re Jana from drowning?
I especially liked the author’s treatment
of how the animals came from far away to enter the great
Ark
and how Noah’s family cared for them while they were
all together on the great ship.
A must read! I would put it on the high
school library shelf without hesitation! There are intimate
scenes, but they are handled with much care and are never lewd or
vulgar.
