Librarians,

Today
I have several treasures to pass along to you.

I look forward to hearing
from you with others to share.

If you have had a recent challenge to a
book, please share that information, as well.
Recommendation from Terri Smith-Chavira, Secondary Reading
Specialist, Region III:

Small Steps
written by Louis Sachar revives two of the
Holes characters, Armpit and
X-Ray, two years after their release from Camp Green Lake. The novel is set in Austin, Texas while Armpit
is attempting to take "small steps" in order to graduate from
high school and regain his parent's trust. Armpit and X-Ray are
involved in various subplots that include a disabled girl, Ginny, and a
teen diva, Kaira Deleon. The novel is humorous and fast paced as all four
characters struggle with the "small steps" they face in
life. Teens will connect with the multitude of issues Sachar so cleverly
intertwines throughout this novel such as peer pressure, facing
difficulties, racism, consequences for the choices they make, finding
acceptance and so forth.

Reading Lvl 6.1
Recommended for Middle School or
High School collections

Recommendation from Clyde Ruth Beyer, Librarian, Crain Middle
School, Victoria ISD:

Owen & Mzee, the true story
of a remarkable friendship.  Told by Isabella Hatkoff, Craig Hatkoff, and Dr. Paula
Kahumbu.  photos by Peter
Greste.

Owen is a baby
hippo, the only survivor of his pod, orphaned by the tsunami in Southeast
Asia--which reached ,
Africa
.  People worked HARD to
rescue him.  He was placed in

Haller
Park

because he would not be accepted into another pod.  He became friends with Mzee--a 130
year old Aldabra tortoise

Reading Level
6.0

Recommendation from a Colleague of Clyde Ruth Beyer,
Librarian, Crain Middle School, Victoria ISD:

Mama:  a true story in which a Baby Hippo
loves his mama during.the tsnami, but finds a new home, and a new
mama by Jeanette
Winter.  Retells the story in
PICTURES, with just 2 words:
"mama" and "baby".  Neat story and good to teach "reading with
expression.

Good Idea -
shared by Diana Gurecky, District Librarian, Tidehaven
ISD:
After seeing Judi’s interest in Nicholas Sparks ([ast
week's "Trash & Treasures"] it triggered my
mentioning the new feature I started here in our high school library
last year----We have a special area of shelves which is adjacent to our
Fiction area----it is labeled
POPULAR
NOVELISTS.  Here we
have shelves marked with the designated author’s names of some
‘most-read’ novelists which are heavily circulated. Most of
these are adult novelists popular with young adult
readers-------------
Stephen King
Dean Koontz
Danielle Steel
Nora Roberts
John Grisham
Nicholas Sparks
Mary Higgins Clark
V.C. Andrews
By featuring (shelving) these novelists
separately in one area, it makes it easier to re-shelve for our student
aides, and for the patrons to go straight over to check on another title
they want to read next.

Many thanks to those who have shared titles and ideas!!!
