I haven't personally seen the movie "Hoot" yet, (based on Carl
Hiaasen's book by the same title) but from all I've heard, it's good, and
stays fairly true to the book.  The one caution I've read, though, is
that the AR test is easy enough to pass having just seen the
movie.

Here's a YA Review from Terri

Boy2Girl

Terence
Blacker

A delightful
read about a community of boys, girls, parents, and teachers! Terence
wrote his book in short point of view segments. The story is revealed
through the experiences of each character’s short blurb. Teens 12-16
would find this book humorous and a delight to read. It addresses many of
the issues our youth face today such as clicks, acceptance, loss, coming
of age, deception, bullies, family communication or lack of, school,
friendship, and the list continues. There is mild language at times (a
word here or there) and some other issues concerning cross dressing,
hormonal change…however, it is lightly approached, more as thoughts
that all humans have cross their mind! In lieu of that, I believe it would
be a wonderful read especially for that reluctant reader. Also, teachers,
you could use a small portion for discussion and/or writing.

Steve Forester
(a teacher)

“…The gender divide between the boys and girls
seemed to narrow. Sometimes I would look up from my desk after class had
been given some work and face the unusual sight of the tops of heads.
Normally there would be a few faces staring into space or gazing out the
window or even trying to distract one of the other boys…not any
more… .”  pg.200
