Celebrate Memorial Day With
unitedstreaming!
Memorial Day was originally
known as Decoration Day. It was a time set
aside to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War
soldiers by decorating their graves. It was first
widely observed on May 30, 1868.
By the late 1800s,
many cities and towns across the country started
to celebrate Memorial Day. After World War
I, observances honored those who had died in all
of America's wars. Congress declared Memorial Day
a national holiday in 1971 to be celebrated the
last Monday in May.
It is a Memorial
Day tradition for the president or vice-president
to honor the contributions of the dead by giving a
speech and laying a wreath at the Tomb of the
Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.
