The United Nations is an international
organization of countries whose mission is to promote and maintain
international peace and security and to develop friendly relations among
nations on the principles of equal rights and self-determination. The U.N.
was formally established in 1945 after World War II ended. Members are an
alliance of countries who have agreed to cooperate with one another,
bringing together a wide range of social and political systems. The United
Nations organization was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001.
