SUBJECT: Family Literacy Funds for 2007

Grants of
up to $50,000 each are available for family literacy projects that provide
reading instruction for parents or primary caregivers and their children.
Note that beginning this year the amount of the grant has been increased
from $25,000 to $50,000. The funds are available through a statewide
initiative called The First Lady’s Family Literacy Initiative
for Texas, part of the Barbara Bush Texas Fund for Family Literacy
program. The Honorary Chair of this initiative is first lady Laura Bush.
These grants are awarded to help create new family literacy programs, or
expand existing programs that currently work with just one generation
(e.g. children) in order to provide a component for the parents and
children to read and learn together. The grant also allows for innovative
projects within existing family literacy programs, as well as replication
of a successful program with a new population or in a new location. It is
not expected that this grant will suffice to fund all components of the
proposed family literacy program.
